Hearing aid devices are a pretty significant investment. In order to keep them working in top condition, they require a lot of upkeep, like regular cleaning. Unlike a lot of electronics, hearing aids operate in conditions that are not all that ideal (remember that they’re constantly in touch with the inside of the ear canals and come in contact with moisture and earwax). Below, we’ve listed a few cleaning tips to help hearing aid wearers get the most use from their hearing aids.
Get the Right Tools
A wax pick, as well as a brush, are essential cleaning items for hearing aids. Earwax can build up on the hearing aid, resulting in muffled or feedback sounds (whistling). If left for an extended period of time, it can cause damage to the receiver. Gently remove the built-up wax with a pick and brush.
Prioritize Hygiene
Before cleaning hearing aids, wearers should make sure to wash their hands. After cleaning, leave the hearing aids out to dry. Also, make sure to remove the hearing aids before showering so they don’t come into contact with water.
Clean the Device Before Going to Bed
Cleaning hearing aid devices right before bedtime gives them a lot of time to air out. Avoid wipes with alcohol or chemicals when cleaning hearing aids since they could damage the device.
Avoid letting the hearing aids come in contact with extreme temperatures: If the temperature is below freezing, make sure to take the hearing aids out of the ear and stash them in the coat pocket. Similarly, on hot days, hearing aid wearers should leave their hearing aids at home instead of wearing them out. Also, don’t make the mistake of wearing hearing aids when swimming.
Further, for all types of hearing aids, make sure to remove the batteries and keep the device’s battery compartment open to dry at night. If the hearing aids are rechargeable, dock them as per the manufacturer’s specifications. Hearing aid wearers should also brush the battery compartment with a cleaning brush every day to ensure there is no grime or ear wax in or around the area.
